Pilates for the Mind, Body and Spirit

pilates for mental health May 02, 2016

Last week, one of my Pilates clients invited me to her 50th birthday bash! I was honored to be included and when I told her that, she said that I was an important person in her life as Pilates had helped her not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally. A few months ago, she went through some major health issues and all through that trying time, she continued to attend her regular Pilates classes. While practicing Pilates, she was able to take her focus away from her stressful situation and thus managed to go through the surgery and recovery with her mind and body strong.

“The acquisition and enjoyment of physical well-being, mental calm, and spiritual peace are priceless to their possessors if there be any such fortunate living among us today.  However, it is the ideal to strive for, and in our opinion, it is only through Contrology that this unique trinity of a balanced body, mind, and spirit can ever be attained.”

– Joseph Pilates (1945)

Joseph Pilates identified his work as Contrology: a ‘control’ that results in freedom, letting go of disempowering muscular and mental habits, patterns, and/or corresponding belief systems. “By reawakening thousands and thousands of otherwise ordinarily dormant muscle cells, Contrology correspondingly reawakens thousands and thousands of dormant brain cells, thus activating new areas and stimulating further functioning of the mind.

No wonder then that so many people express such great surprise, following their initial experience with Contrology exercises, caused by their realization of the resulting sensation of ‘uplift’. For the first time in many years their minds have been truly awakened.”

So, the next time you attend a Pilates class, take a few moments to find the connection between mind, body and spirit – you will be truly uplifted! We would be honored to have you join us at one of our two locations! Check out our weekly schedule here

Finally, consider this quote from author Russell McDougal from his booklet The Isle of View: JOB Just Orchestrating Balance:

“Life is a dance, and we have to juggle things to find a sense of balance.  May we find that center that gives us the balance to find grace and magic of life.  Let go of attachments and judgments, and let your mind be in harmony.  It’s a dance.  It’s a trance.  It’s a romance with the balance of life.”
