Inside Our Active Aging Workshop

In November we held our Active Aging workshop at our South Miami studio alongside a panel of experts. We wanted to help over 60s be fearless about getting older by giving them the knowledge they need to succeed with an active lifestyle. Experts Share Tips At Our Active Aging Workshop

We care about our community and many don’t realize how a few simple changes can transform their formative years so they can stay active and healthy for much longer! Knowledge is power and we covered a variety of different topics that all contribute to better all-round health and wellness as we age. Including:

Nutrition

Joined by nutritionist and dietitian, Carla RD, CDE, we not only discussed the importance of nutrition as we age but the types of food that are most beneficial when we get to 60 and beyond.

Small diet changes can make a huge difference to our wellbeing, and can even have an impact on preventing injury during a fall. Carla also shared her tips and tricks for portion sizes as well as some easy switches you can make from your current diet to easily incorporate more nutritious food.

Best Takeaways (pun intended!) From Carla:

    1. Don’t fall for fad diets – The best diet will be the one you can follow for the rest of your life while enjoying it. Restrictive diets only lead to guilt, overconsumption, and are unrealistic to follow long-term.
    2. Focus on protein – Protein helps to maintain and build muscle mass that we naturally start to lose thanks to aging. Carla’s favorite high-protein snack? Low-fat, plain Greek yogurt!
    3. Make half of your plate vegetables – That way you’ll be balancing up the proportions of healthy vs non-healthy on your plate. Plus, you can never have too many veggies.

Mental Health

Wellbeing is not just about the physical, it’s about mental agility as well. We felt it was important to give a well-rounded workshop by inviting Neuropsychologist Marcela Kitaigorodsky, Psy.D. to discuss mental health as we age. Anxiety, loneliness, and depression are some of the most common mental health problems for the over 60s and Dr. Kitaigorodsky discussed support as well as why we should strive for confidence, motivation, and happiness.

We don’t have to feel depressed or anxious just because we get older and Marcela also discussed the benefits of exercise on mental health, showing that it’s truly all connected!

Main Takeaways From Marcela:

    1. Healthy aging can be promoted by staying mentally, physically, and socially active!
    2. Depression and loneliness are NOT part of the normal aging process.
    3. What is good for your heart, is good for your brain! 35% of dementia risk factors are modifiable lifestyle choices.

Pilates & Exercise

Of course, our studio founder and CEO, Christa, MSPT, NCPT, was also on hand to share the unique benefits of Pilates for over 60s. Particularly as we have specific age-related classes for our clients – really putting the active in active aging! As a physical therapist, Christa was also able to share insights on Osteoporosis, a condition that affects over 50 million Americans and how to combat low bone density with exercise and Pilates.

Contrary to popular belief, pain management, like reducing low back pain, as well as bone-related diseases like Osteoporosis, can be managed with an active lifestyle (check out the video below for an exercise to get started!). For so long, it was thought that sufferers would have to live a sedentary lifestyle and just ‘accept’ it was a part of getting older. Luckily we debunked this myth at the workshop.

We were so glad to see our participants learning that you can be fitter in your 60s than you were in your 30s with the right tools and knowledge!

Main Takeaways From Christa:

  1. Don’t be afraid of movement – Movement is the key to staying mobile. We don’t stop moving because we age, we age because we stop moving.
  2. When in doubt ask for help – Our bodies are unique, so seek out the guidance of a trained professional to help meet your individual needs and goals.
  3. Join a studio or group – There is power, and accountability, in numbers. Find a group to exercise with so everyone helps keep each other accountable – and join our Facebook group to access support anytime!
