How Pilates Makes Me Feel

“Pilates saved my life.” ……… A client once said this to me right before a class. We were waiting for the other class participants to arrive so we were chatting and I asked him how long he had been doing Pilates. I assumed he meant it metaphorically but then he went on to tell me that about a year ago he had been going through some very trying times and had reached a point of complete depression and low self-esteem and just when he felt that he couldn’t go on, he found Pilates. It changed his life. He loved taking group classes because he enjoyed the pace and challenging exercises. That one hour spent on focusing on his form, his breathing and execution of the exercises lifted his spirits and he started to take classes every day. Soon, he began to notice the physical changes: he had more energy, strength, balance and coordination; he looked leaner and more toned; and he felt happy!

This was indeed the intention of Joseph Pilates when he created an exercise system which he called Contrology, a system that “develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.” Today this method is called Pilates.

How does Pilates elevate the spirit? Joe wrote that “by reawakening thousands and thousands of otherwise ordinarily dormant muscle cells, Contrology correspondingly reawakens thousands and thousands of dormant brain cells, thus activating new areas and stimulating further functioning of the mind. No wonder then that so many persons express such great surprise, following their initial experience with Contrology exercises, caused by their realization of the resulting sensation of ‘uplift’. For the first time in many years their minds have been truly awakened.”
